Snow and Rain: 5 Tips for Mastering Chic Layering (Without Volume)
Hello everyone,
The cold weather is coming, and with it, the big winter fashion challenge: how to stay warm without looking like you've put on your entire wardrobe? The solution lies in layering , but it must be approached as an art to avoid creating unnecessary bulk.
Here are Lydie's 5 golden rules for mastering layering and enhancing your silhouette, even in 5 degree weather!
Tip #1: The Thin and Structured Base (The Second Skin)
The secret to successful layering is to start with a very thin, close-fitting layer . It should keep you warm without adding bulk.
-
What you need: A cotton top, a fitted bodysuit or a flowy shirt (like our Molly shirt ) that you can easily tuck into your pants.
-
The mistake to avoid: Loose t-shirts or materials that are too thick, which will wrinkle under the sweater.
-
🛍️ To shop: A base as thin as a shirt
Tip #2: Targeted Heat (The Cozy Middle)
It's the layer that provides the warmth! But be careful with the fit:
-
Opt for the Sleeveless Vest: Sleeveless vests (like our Charles Vest ) are great! They keep your body warm while leaving your arms free and avoiding the "square" effect at the shoulders.
-
The Thin Sweater: If you choose a sweater, opt for a soft and fine knit (like the Noah Bordeaux V-Neck Sweater ) that can easily be slipped under a jacket.
-
The mistake to avoid: Layering two very thick sweaters.
Tip #3: The Game of Length (The Art of Asymmetry)
To avoid the "block" effect, you need to play with the length of the pieces:
-
If your sweater is long (like a Sweater Dress ), wear it with a jacket or coat that is longer or much shorter than it (never the same length!).
-
If you are wearing a long blouse, just tuck the front into your pants (the famous tuck style) and let the back hang out of the sweater.
Tip #4: The Slimming Belt (The Must-Have)
This is the miracle solution when you're wearing multiple layers!
-
The secret: To achieve your waistline despite the thickness of your sweater or cardigan, add a belt over the mid-layer (as often seen on our Sweater Dresses !). This instantly structures the silhouette.
-
The mistake to avoid: Wearing a belt that cuts right through the middle of your coat. Wear it over your sweater.
Tip #5: The Structured Exterior Room
Your coat or jacket (the outermost layer) should be slightly stiffer and of better quality than the layers below.
-
A well-cut officer jacket or a long blazer provides the necessary structure and gives a clean finish to the whole outfit, even if you are wearing a thick sweater underneath.
-
🛍️ Must-have: Complete your look with a structured jacket
